Broadcasters honor Mike Bloomberg.

In 1992, Michael Bloomberg bought WNEW (1130) and used the New York station to launch what would become the sprawling Bloomberg News platform of radio, television, online and print.  Last night the Broadcasters Foundation of America have him its Golden Mike Award.

During the ceremony, the New York Mayor proved he could go toe-to-toe with broadcasters, including the show’s MC, John Gambling.  “Every Friday morning I have to carry John Gambling for 60 minutes with my witty banter,” Bloomberg needled the WOR, New York (710) morning man with whom he does a weekly radio show.  Fox Television Station Group president Dennis Swanson called Bloomberg, “A man for these difficult times.” Bloomberg’s retort; “I hope your boss’s boss remembers that the next time the New York Post writes an editorial.”

But it wasn’t all zingers at the annual fundraiser for the organization that provides an anonymous safety net for radio and TV broadcasters who have fallen on hard times.  BFA president Jim Thompson called the organization “both the emergency room and the hospice,” noting that it will distribute $500,000 this year to those in need.   Bloomberg encouraged the well-heeled industry crowd gathered for a black tie New York event to “give back” — whether through money or talent.

It was more than just bravado from one of the richest men in the world. According to the New York Times, he donated $235 million to various causes in 2008, more than any one else alive.  The Golden Mike Ward is given to an individual who embodies excellence in broadcasting and ongoing community service. Past recipients have included Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth, Inner City Broadcasting founder Percy Sutton and former NAB CEO Eddie Fritts.
