Inside Radio Survey: Industry headed in wrong direction.
Revenue that’s no longer in decline, signs that some stations are hiring and renewed interest by Wall Street in radio have all been seen as positive indicators. But for a vast majority of Inside Radio readers, the industry still has the same problems it did one year ago.
Three-quarters (76%) of respondents believe radio’s leaders aren’t taking the industry in the right direction. Nearly one-quarter (24%) of those who took the survey say the industry is making the necessary changes to ensure its survival and is on the right track.
Many who commented questioned radio’s turnaround and how the industry has been operated in recent years. “If the industry was a car, on each fill-up of gas, the owner would put a dime less gas in the tank and expect more mileage,” one reader says. Others say small market and independent operators are doing more to lead the industry than some of the largest groups. One reader says, “The radio industry isn’t moving at all. But the rest of the world keeps rushing by.”
