FCC: 2% more stations on the air.
The latest sign of recovery in the radio business comes from the FCC where the number of licensed radio stations continues to climb. The agency says there were 15,256 stations on the air at the end of first quarter, a 2% increase compared to a year earlier. The number of commercial FMs went up 1% while the number of AMs ticked down a fraction.
The big increase came in the number of non-commercial FMs – they grew 6%. The big surprise: the number of FM translators and boosters fell by 44. There were 802 LPFMs on the air, a drop of 28 compared to a year ago.
