Host’s scavenger hunt grows more than followers.
The man behind a social media scavenger hunt in the Washington-Baltimore area has turned out to be … wait for it… a radio morning man. Marc Orem, who goes by the name Marco on Cumulus Media Washington CHR WRQX (107.3), revealed himself Thursday as the person behind the @IHidTheCash Twitter campaign.
Orem, who is also director of programming at the station, anonymously tweeted clues about the location of envelopes containing $20 to $50 in cash hidden around the region. Since early May, @IHidTheCash has tweeted 1,400 times, attracted more than 9,000 followers and given away about $1,000. Orem, 37, said the inspiration for the campaign, which has attracted local media coverage, came after his boss told him he was too old to understand social media and its Millennial users.
A morning man since 1999, Orem says he wanted it to be more of a project than a promotion with generosity as a core value. He says the campaign was never intended as a stunt to promote his radio show and that he kept the station and Cumulus in the dark.
Many of those who found the cash did “pay it forward,” he says, to organizations like the Humane Society or people suffering in the Middle East. One woman bought haircuts for a newly adopted blind brother and sister. “So many people who came in contact with this cash would tell me, being able to share the story of what I did with the found cash was the best part,” he says.
