The Peabody Award-winning “Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen,” described as “a smart and surprising guide to what's happening in pop culture and the arts,” will conclude production and broadcast distribution, public media organization PRX announced Tuesday.
The final broadcast episode of “Studio 360” will air by the end of February 2020, marking nearly two decades of conversation, storytelling and insight into the arts, pop culture and the creative process. The show’s digital audio archive will be made permanently available to listeners on-demand.
“’Studio 360’ has presented a who’s who of diverse cultural leaders, performers and creators with verve and style,” said John Barth, Chief Content Officer at PRX. “Anchored by Kurt Andersen’s sharp, inquisitive, free-range mind and personality, a generation of creative producers has explored an impressive scope of arts and culture. We’re proud of all that ‘Studio 360’ has brought into the lives of listeners over a remarkable 20 years.”
Co-creator and host Andersen added, “When we started Studio 360 back at the turn of the century, in the pre-podcast era, there really were no national radio shows devoted to art and pop culture. I was told that public radio had tried and failed to do that, and this would be one last try.” He says the goal was to be smart and fun, “to cover the brand new and the great old, the high and low and in between, with stories and conversations with artists and makers about the ideas behind work and the nuts and bolts of making it. It was a huge leap of faith on everyone’s part.”
Andersen said he will conclude his full-time role at the end of October 2019. Produced by PRI in association with Slate, the show first aired in New York and Los Angeles and a few other cities in fall 2000; today it is now heard on 217 stations. “Studio 360” has received two George Foster Peabody Awards and Edward R. Murrow Awards, and recognitions from the New York State Associated Press, the Asian American Journalists Association, and the Alliance for Women in Media. It also has a podcast.
