“Rock 95 Five” WCHI, the former iHeartMedia country station in Chicago that launched just before Labor Day weekend, has begun assembling its air staff. Angi Taylor, part of the “Fred and Angi” morning team at CHR sister “Kiss FM” WKSC-FM, will host mornings as a solo act on the new station.
The former WEBG has been running jock-less since its Sept. 3 launch. Within the coming weeks, Taylor will leave the “Kiss” morning show anchored by Christopher “Fred” Frederick and launch “The Angi Taylor Show” on the station. Midday, afternoon, evening and weekend talent are expected to debut at the same time.
“I’ve been working 22 years for the moment that I could host my very own morning show,” Taylor said in a statement. “I can’t express how much it means to me that my dream is coming true on Chicago’s ‘Rock 95 Five!’ Thank you, iHeartMedia, 103.5 Kiss FM, and all the listeners for letting me into your lives every day.”
Taylor earlier was part of morning show teams on iHeart CHRs KDWB Minneapolis and “Q102” WIOQ Philadelphia, before hitching her wagon with WKSC-FM in 2008, working with Kevin “DreX” Buchar. She survived the morning transition from Buchar to Frederick in 2011, when the show was rebranded as “Fred and Angi in the Morning.”
Calling Taylor “a true icon of Chicago radio,” iHeartMarket President Matt Scarano said the personality’s “wit, wisdom, experience and incredible talent make her the perfect fit for ‘Rock 95 Five.’”
Handing off Taylor to its new rock cluster-mate leaves Kevin “Rufio” Santiago, Kaelin Roberts and Paulina Roe as part of the morning ensemble team at “Kiss.”
“In trading Taylor to their new rocker, iHeartMedia opens with an established name in Chicago whose reputation as edgy and rebellious fits with the format,” Chicago media reporter Robert Feder writes.
James Howard, Regional Senior VP of Programming for iHeartMedia Chicago and PD of “Rock 95 Five,” said: “Taylor’s love of music and life in Chicago makes her the ideal host to help kickstart any rock fan’s day. She is unfiltered, undeniable and her lust for life is contagious, I can’t wait to listen.”
