Darren Minor, who uses the on-air name Maverick on iHeartMedia country KMAG Ft. Smith, AR (99.1), where he hosted afternoons, has been fired for a sexist tweet directed at a University of Arkansas women’s basketball player.
A photo collage posted by a freshman player in her team uniform sitting on a table at the Bud Walton Arena was commented on by Minor on Twitter, who wrote, “Now they just need to install a pole.” The tweet was quickly deleted and Minor apologized with followup posts.
Arkansas coach Mike Neighbors released a statement on Twitter condemning the comment.
“As a women’s basketball coach and a father, I am disgusted over how one of my players has been objectified,” the statement read. “Women in sports face this type of unfair, misogynistic treatment far too often, and as their coach, and as a man, I condemn the words and actions of anyone who thinks women are not equal to men.”
iHeartMedia Area President Clyde Bass told KFSM-TV that as soon as he was made aware of the comment the matter was addressed internally, leading to the dismissal of Miner.
His presence has been scrubbed from the KMAG website and his Twitter account has been deleted.
