Entercom hot AC “Star 94.1” WSTR Atlanta has filled its three-month old programming opening with Jerry McKenna, most recently with Cape Cod Broadcasting. McKenna, who replaces Ron Roberts, has his work cut out for him. To rebuild the station, “Star 94.1” has undergone sweeping changes in recent months, overhauling its entire primetime on-air lineup.
News of McKenna’s appointment was first reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Rodney Ho.
McKenna was Director of Programming & Marketing for Cape Cod Broadcasting’s four-station cluster from November 2013 to October 2018. Stations under his purview included hot AC WQRC, country WKPE, AC WOCN and classical WFCC. Before that he spent six years as Ops Manager and Regional Program/Marketing Director for Cumulus Media’s four-station cluster in Worcester-Springfield, MA.
McKenna brings major market experience as Director of Programming and Marketing at hot AC WBMX Boston, when it was owned by CBS Radio. No stranger to Entercom, he programmed the company’s “Star 93.7” WQXR and “Mike FM” WMKK Boston from July 2002-August 2005. He also worked in record promotion for RCA Records and Columbia and was Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 chart manager and director of the former Airplay Monitor.
WSTR was tied for fourteenth place in Nielsen’s August 2019 survey with a 2.9, down from a 3.4 in July, trailing Cox Media Group AC “B98.5” WSB-FM (6.0), iHeartMedia CHR “Power 96” WWPW (3.8) and Cumulus Media CHR “Q100” WWWQ (3.1).
Ron Roberts, McKenna’s predecessor, joined the station in August 2018 from iHeartMedia Myrtle Beach, where he was Senior VP of Programming.
