Technical issues are plaguing Entercom’s company-wide email system as messages to any company address that end with @entercom.com are being returned from Entercom Postmaster with the subject “Technical Issues” and the message, “We are currently experiencing technical issues with our email. Please contact our local markets via phones, or visit our website at www.entercom.com to find our contact information.”
It’s unclear what caused the issue, with some speculating the company was hit with a ransomware attack—but what is certain is that the outage continues into Tuesday, Sept. 10.
A phone call to Entercom officials from Inside Radio was not immediately returned.
Cyber-attacks have been a problem for individual radio stations in recent years but this may be the first time one has affected the main company email servers.
KQED San Francisco was the victim of a ransomware attack in June 2017 that took months to recover from. Urban One was hit with an attack that crippled some of its IT systems and databases and ultimately cost the company $1 million in lost revenue and expenses. Other recent attacks have impacted adult alternative “88.5 Community Radio” WMNF Tampa, River Radio of Southern Illinois and Sky High Broadcasting religious teaching outlet “The Word” KNEO Joplin, MO (91.7).
The issue was also the subject of a panel, “Preparing for A Cyber Attack: A Case Study” at the NAB Show in Las Vegas in April.
