Ericka Cruz Guevarra

Ericka Cruz Guevarra will take over as host of the KQED San Francisco-produced podcast The Bay. She previously served as a producer for the series. Guevarra replaces The Bay’s former host Devin Katayama, who is now KQED’s first Editor of Talent and Development.

Guevarra joined The Bay in 2019. Since then, KQED says she has been instrumental in covering essential local news stories for the station, including the award-winning 2019 series on Vallejo policing and The Bay’s episode on the role of race in the Orinda shooting.

“I love stories that I think challenge what we believe about the world,” says Guevarra. “I love stories where we can take people to parts of the Bay Area that they might not always be familiar with, or places in the Bay Area that just don't get coverage because of the decline in local media,” she said in a Q&A with Katayama.

Guevarra first joined KQED in 2015 as the station’s first Raul Ramirez Diversity Fund intern. From there, she worked as a breaking news reporter for Oregon Public Broadcasting where she won a regional Society of Professional Journalists award for her wildfire coverage. She also worked and helped produce NPR’s Code Switch team and is an alumna of NPR’s Next Generation Radio project at KJZZ in Phoenix. She returned back to KQED as a producer of The Bay in 2019.

“I wanted to be a journalist since I was in middle school, actually. I was just interested in writing, and in high school, I was obsessed with the news. And then when I got to college at San Francisco State, I took this class with Venise Wagner. It was a ‘Social Impact of Journalism’ class. And it went into the different kinds of media; the difference between commercial and public media,” said Guevarra. “And I just fell in love with the mission of public media in that class. And from there I was like...I want to work at KQED. I was, I think, a sophomore in college at the time, and I was like, ‘I'm going to get there eventually, and that's where I want to work.’"

Guevarra and The Bay editor Alan Montecillo have been co-hosting the podcast on an interim basis since early September. Guevarra began hosting The Bay full-time on Friday.
