iHeartMedia exits the crowded rock field in the Greenville-Spartanburg, SC market, discarding “Real Rock 104.9” WROO, one of the company’s “Man Up” branded stations, in favor of sports. “Fox Sports 104.9 Upstate” relies on programming from Fox Sports Radio, outside of nightly program hosted by veteran South Carolina sports broadcaster Phil Kornblut that airs Monday through Friday from 6-8pm. WROO will continue to air South Carolina Gamecocks football.
Debuting Monday, Sept. 13, “Fox Sports 104.9 Upstate” features FSN programming including, “Outkick The Coverage” (6-9am), “The Dan Patrick Show” (9am-12pm), “The Herd with Colin Cowherd” (12-3pm), “The Doug Gottlieb Show” (3-6pm), “The Odd Couple with Chris Broussard & Rob Parker” (8-10pm) “The Jason Smith Show” (10pm-2am) and “The Ben Maller Show” (2-6am).
“We’re excited to bring back the Fox Sports Radio brand to the Upstate,” Senior VP of Programming, iHeartMedia Asheville/Greenville Brian Hall said in a release. “Our listeners will have access to the best names in sports talk, plus regional coverage. It’s also a natural pairing with the South Carolina Gamecocks.”
As a classic rock outlet, WROO managed a 0.8 in the July 2021 Nielsen ratings, trailing Audacy classic rock WROQ (101.1), which is ranked fifth in the same period with a 4.5. Co-owned rock “93.3 The Planet” WTPT is ranked 11th with a 2.6.
Audacy also owns “ESPN Upstate” WORD/WYRD (950/1330), which is simulcast on the Spartanburg-licensed translator W246CV at 97.1. The station is near the bottom of the rankers with a 0.2 AQH share (Persons 6+).
