Nielsen PPM

As the first PPMs of the summer months roll-out, the battle for “Format of the Summer” begins. Traditionally, classic hits and classic rock have had the biggest share percentage increases June-July-August. With the Day One of the June PPMs released, both formats have Top 5 showings in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Philadelphia.

In Philadelphia, Entercom classic hits WOGL (98.1) and Beasley Media Group classic rock WMGK (102.9) place second and third, respectively (6+). WOGL had a half-share increase moving 7.0-7.2-7.7, while WMGK was down a tick (7.0-7.4-7.2). Jerry Lee Broadcasting AC WBEB (101.1) holds onto first while remaining relatively flat (8.3-8.4-8.5).

Dallas-Ft. Worth is the only other Top 10 market that has both classic hits and classic rock stations in the Top 5. iHeartMedia classic rock KZPS (92.5) is second, even with a slight down trend (5.5-5.5-5.3), trailing CHR sister KHKS (106.1) by a share. Entercom classic hits KLUV (98.9) stays flat (4.4-4.5-4.5) to land at No. 5.

Entercom classic hits WCBS-FM (101.1) takes second in market number one, however the station is trending down in June, moving 6.1-6.3-5.8. iHeartMedia classic rock WAXQ is also down ever-so-slightly (4.1-4.1-4.0) - good enough for eighth place. Market leader iHeartMedia AC WLTW (106.7) is also down (8.5-7.7-7.3) but retains its fixed position at the top of the Nielsen monthly.

Entercom classic hits KRTH (101.1) Los Angeles takes third place (4.8-5.0-5.1) in the market, a half-share behind iHeartMedia AC KOST (103.5), while hot AC sister KBIG (104.3) remains in first with a 5.8 share (6+).

Hubbard classic rock “The Drive” WDRV/WWDV (97.1/96.9) moves 4.6-4.6-4.8, good enough for fourth, while Cumulus Media classic hits WLS-FM (94.7) is ranked seventh in the Chicago market (3.8-4.3-4.2). iHeartMedia urban AC WVAZ (102.7) leads the pack with a 6.0.

In Houston, Cox Media Group KGLK/KHPT (107.5/106.9) placed fourth (4.8-4.9-5.2), while classic hits sister WSRV Atlanta (97.1) moves 6.4-6.1-6.6, good enough for third in its market.

Nielsen determines the “Format of the Summer” from share percentage increases during June-July-August compared to the first five months of the year. Classic rock has been crowned the victor for the past two years.

The June PPM ratings period covers May 24-June 20.
