…Barrett Sports Media announces that Westwood One’s Pat McAfee will receive the Tony Bruno Award at the 2020 BSM Summit, while Mitch Rosen, PD at Entercom “The Score” WSCR Chicago, is named the first recipient of the Mark Chernoff Award. “Mitch Rosen’s contributions to the sports radio format are endless,” Barrett Sports Media President Jason Barrett said in a release. “Spend two minutes with Mitch, and you learn quickly just how much he loves this business and appreciates his people.” Regarding McAfee, the former Colts placekicker turned broadcaster, Barrett added, “At just 32 years old, Pat has dove head first into the business, building an incredible brand across multi-platforms by being relatable, credible, and highly motivated. Though his best days in the industry are still ahead of him, executives are well aware of his rapid rise and special talents.” The 2020 BSM Summit is Feb 26-27 at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York. … “Smokin’” Tony Richards joins the Westwood One-syndicated “Rick and Sasha Show.” Richards has held on-air, programming and production positions in New York, Houston, Philadelphia, Washington and Chicago. “Tony wears so many hats extremely well,” show GM and co-creator Gary Bernstein said in a release. “He is a brilliant broadcaster, programmer, producer, creative force, as well as an energetic and experienced voice in the room. His talents will immediately be felt on the show.” The urban AC morning show is syndicated to more than 25 radio stations across the country.
…The call for entry for the 2020 Radio Mercury Awards is now open. This year, the Radio Mercury Awards has added some new prize categories, including Multicultural Radio Spot Campaign, which is intended for specific non-general, market consumer segments, including, but not limited to, Hispanic, African-American, LGBTQ+, Asian and People with Disabilities. There will also be one additional prize each for the Radio Commercial, Radio Campaign and Station-Produced Radio Commercial categories. The deadline for entries is April 3, with finalists revealed May 4 and winners announced at the 29th Radio Mercury Awards event, June 4 at Sony Hall in New York. Entry information can be viewed HERE.
… When Beasley Media Group purchased urban AC “105.9 Kiss FM” WDMK Detroit and three translators from Urban One for $13.5 million, it inherited the Reach Media-syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” With Joyner retiring, WDMK follows the succession plan, adding “The Rickey Smiley Morning Show.” “We are thrilled to have Rickey Smiley join 105.9 Kiss FM,” PD John Candelaria said in a release. “I have watched Rickey ascend to national superstar over the past 20 years and we are excited to have him leading the line-up for the All New 105.9 Kiss FM. Detroit is ready for a fresh new morning show.”
…iHeartRadio debuts a new branded podcast with Under Armour, “The Only Way Is Through,” which will publish its first episode Jan. 21. The eight-episode series will take a deep dive into the lives of elite athletes. The podcast is hosted by Cal Fussman with the first episode featuring 8x All American athlete and heptathlon competitor Georgia Ellenwood. Upcoming episodes also include the most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, two-time women’s national championship basketball coach Muffet McGraw and heavyweight champion of the world Anthony Joshua.
…The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF) has extended the entry deadline to submit entries for the 45th Annual Gracie Awards. Entries will be accepted until Jan. 23 HERE. AWMF has also secured Ziploc Brand, which will serve as the Diamond Sponsor of the 2020 Gracies Gala. The 2020 Gracie Awards entry eligibility air dates are from Jan. 1, 2019, through Dec. 31, 2019. The 45th annual gala will be held May 19 at the Beverly Wilshire, Beverly Hills and the Gracie Awards Luncheon is June 24 in New York City at Cipriani 42nd Street.
