...The Radio Mercury Awards has extended the entry deadline until Aug. 23. The original deadline was Aug. 9. Finalists for the show will be announced in late September, and winners will be announced Nov. 17. More information on this year’s award slate, along with call for entry guidelines and deadlines, can be viewed HERE. Last month, the organization announced the 2021 Final Round Jury, consisting of high-level creative leaders representing radio’s top advertising categories including automotive, consumer packaged goods (CPG), communications, community service, education, financial services, nonprofits, quick-service restaurants, retail, spirits, technology and utilities.
...Phil Valentine, afternoon host at Cumulus Media “Super Talk 99.7” WWTN Hendersonville, TN, has been hospitalized with COVID-19 at Williamson Medical Center, just outside of Nashville, Scoop Nashville reports. Valentine was diagnosed with the virus on July 9 and was hospitalized over the weekend as his condition worsened.
...The partnership between Gateway Creative Broadcasting and Educational Media Foundation (EMF) results in a new outlet for Gateway’s Christian rhythmic CHR format “Boost Radio” format in Portland, OR. The format is now airing on EMF’s Portland-licensed translator K279BO at 103.7, with programming originating on KLVP-HD3. The Portland signal is the sixth for the “Boost Radio” presentation.
...Rick Gary and Christie Casciano Burns, morning hosts at Galaxy Communications classic hits “Sunny 102” WZUN Syracuse, have co-authored their first book “Ringo Is His Name-O,” The children’s book invites readers to tag along and enjoy the adventures of Ringo the therapy dog. The duo, along with Ringo, will be doing a book signing at Picnics at the Park on Thursday, July 22 from 11am-1pm.
...Compass Media Networks has released the first four weeks of coverage for the 2021 NFL season. Week one of NFL action starts on Thursday, Sept. 9 when the Dallas Cowboys travel to the Super Bowl Champions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sunday doubleheader coverage kicks off week 1 with the Seattle Seahawks at the Indianapolis Colts (12:30pm ET), followed by the Cleveland Browns at the Kansas City Chiefs (3:45pm ET). The Las Vegas Raiders start as the first Monday Night game of the year as they take on the Baltimore Ravens. Compass will offer a full slate of NFL game-day broadcasts throughout the 18-week season.
...Alpha Media oldies WCHA Chambersburg, PA (800) is celebrating 75 years on the air. The station signed-on Aug. 11, 1946 after being delayed several years due to World War II. Since its debut, WCHA has had the same call letters, the same frequency, the same studio location and the same transmitter site. The station has been airing Scott Shannon’s “True Oldies” format since 2010 and has been under Alpha Media ownership since 2014.
