The coronavirus crisis has Americans listening to more news/talk streaming radio broadcasts. New data shows the news/talk format experienced a 14% increase in share of online streaming, growing from 29% in the week of March 6-12 to 33% during the period of March 13-19. The data, culled from Triton Digital Webcast Metrics, studied the changes in AM/FM streaming consumption over the two-week period.
The share of streaming for sports radio remained at 8%, while the share of streaming for music formatted radio stations declined from 64% to 59%.
The data shows that consumption patterns by device remain stable, with streaming on mobile devices increasing from 49% to 51% of the total. There was a slight decrease in share of streaming on desktop/laptops, dipping from 27% (March 6-12) to 25% (March 13-19). The share of streaming for smart speaker devices remained steady at 21%.
“Radio in every form – broadcast, streaming audio, and podcasts – remains a trusted and relied upon medium for news and entertainment in the United States,” Triton President of Market Development John Rosso said in a release. “Despite the dislocation of many workers, this data shows the remarkable stability of the medium, as well as the importance of radio in delivering information in a time of crisis.”
