Following up on its revelation that, for the first time ever, U.S. audio and video on-demand streams passed one trillion for the 2019 calendar year, Nielsen Music has released the full 2019 Year-End Music Report. At the time (Nov. 21), Nielsen Music/MRC Data tallied 1.002 trillion streams so far in 2019.
“The year ended with 1.15 trillion on-demand streams, fueled by a big year for hitmakers Post Malone, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande as well as breakthrough artists like Billie Eilish, Lizzo and Lil Nas X,” the company wrote in its report.
The report covers music consumption for the 12-month period beginning Jan. 4, 2019 through Jan. 2, 2020.
Total album equivalent audio consumption was up 11.4% over 2018, driven by a 24% increase in on-demand audio song streams compared to last year. The top-streamed on-demand song (audio and video combined) is Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” with 2.5 billion total streams. The song, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for a historic 19 weeks, also led total song consumption (digital song sales with streaming equivalent on-demand audio) with 8.7 million song equivalent units, including more than 1 billion on-demand audio streams and more than 1.5 million song sales.
Nielsen Music says that radio continues to be the top source of music discovery. Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Love,” amassed 2.2 billion total audience impressions, spending three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 “on the strength of its high listenership at radio,” the report says. Lil Nas X’s “Panini” had 765 million impressions in 2019 and Sam Smith/Normani’s “Dancing with a Stranger” accounted for 3.1 billion impressions, with 476 million in on-demand streaming.
With the report coming at the end of the decade, Nielsen Music also compiled some of the “Best of the Decade” stats. Six of the most played artists at radio of the decade are country acts. Kenny Chesney was the most played artist of the decade with 15.75 million spins, followed by Tim McGraw (15.74 million), George Strait was No. 5 (13.3 million), Toby Keith was 8th with 11.8, million spins, Alan Jackson (11.7 million) was 9th and Keith Urban (11.6 million) was 10th. Maroon 5 was the most played pop act, coming in 3rd overall with 15.6 million spins, followed by Taylor Swift (14.5 million), who is also the top female act.
