Reach Media launches “The Donnie Simpson Weekend Show,” a two-hour program for adult R&B-formatted radio stations.
Beginning Saturday, Jan. 9, the new show will be heard on “Majic 102.3” WMMJ (owned by Reach Media parent Urban One), where Simpson currently hosts afternoons with Tony Perkins. “The Donnie Simpson Weekend Show” will also be carried on the HD2 channel of Urban One’s WAMJ Atlanta (107.5); and sister stations in seven other markets: WWIN-FM Baltimore (95.9); WOSL Cincinnati (100.3); WZAK Cleveland (93.1); WXMG Columbus (95.5); WPPZ-FM Philadelphia (107.9); WFXC Raleigh (107.1); and WKJS Richmond (105.7).
The program, which also features Perkins, will include music and interviews from Simpson’s archives and will include specific music themes such as “Best Bands” and “Blue-Eyed Soul Singers.” Another planned feature is “Huggy Lowdown’s Celebrity Snitch.”
Simpson is a DC radio icon whose 50+ year career also includes on-air positions at WJLB Detroit and WKYS Washington. Simpson was also one of the first video disc jockeys, serving as host of BET’s “Video Soul.” He was inducted into The Radio Hall of Fame last year.
“People around the country got to watch me on Video Soul for many years, but didn’t get to check me out on my first love, radio,” Simpson said in a release. “Only Detroit and DC would suffer that experience. So, I’m really excited for the rest of the country to finally hear what I do on the radio.”
