True Crime may have seen its downloads dip during the COVID lockdown weeks, but the genre has proven resilient in 2020. Podtrac says among the shows and publishers it measures, True Crime was the most popular category among the new shows released during the first three quarters of the year. Of the top 25 new podcasts for far in 2020, Podtrac says nearly half – 12 shows – are True Crime series. That includes eight of the top ten.
Proving crime sometimes does pay, Wondery and iHeartRadio contributed the most top 25 new shows with each putting five True Crime podcasts into the ranker. Nine Wondery-created shows made the list, with eight coming from iHeart.
“While the pandemic, race relations and politics have dominated the news in 2020 so far, in podcast land it is all about True Crime. Perhaps podcast listeners just need a break,” said Podtrac in a blog post.
The top-ranking new show was the Serial Productions/New York Times-produced Nice White Parents. In the five-episode series, host Chana Joffe-Walt examines a racial component to public schools. It falls into the Society & Culture genre, which Podtrac says was the second most popular genre in the top 25 with five podcasts on the list.
Other ranking genres included News, with two new shows hitting the top 25, with Business, Fiction, Sports, Technology, TV & Film and Comedy each contributing one podcast.
