Chicago radio veteran Bob Sirott returns to the local airwaves as morning host at Nexstar talk WGN (720). Sirott, a Chicago radio mainstay since the 1970s, was let go in 2017 from Cumulus Media talk WLS (890). With his arrival, another Chicago radio veteran, Steve Cochran, heard in mornings since 2013, exits.
Sirott will debut in mornings Jan. 6, 2020. He hosted middays at WGN from 2013-2015 and also held positions at the former WMAQ and WBBM-FM.
Meanwhile, Nexstar has officially named Mary Sandberg Boyle General Manager of WGN. She has been serving as interim GM since Sept. 20 and has been with the station since 2015, previously serving as Director of News and Operations.
It’s the latest in a series of changes at the nearly 100-year old radio station since Nexstar acquired it as part of its $7.2 billion purchase of Tribune Media. WGN is the sole radio station in the TV operator’s portfolio. Upon closing, Sean Compton was named Executive VP of WGN Radio, WGN America and Director of Content Acquisition, marking his return to radio after a nearly 12-year absence.
Bill Leff and Wendy Snyder exited their 10am-12pm shift in November, which was a precursor to the revamped lineup made official with the Sirott announcement.
The new WGN lineup is:
4-5am: Simulcast of WGN-TV “Early Morning News”
5-9am: Bob Sirott
9am-12pm: John Williams
12-1pm: Wintrust Business Lunch with Ji Suk Yi
1-3pm: Anna Davlantes
