WPLJ - WRQX

Before Cumulus Media pulled the rug out from underneath them, the staffs at WPLJ New York and WRQX Washington went down swinging. Both stations posted ratings gains in Nielsen’s May survey, their final full book on the air. The ratings cover the period from April 25-May 22, excluding each station’s final nine days of broadcasts which involved action-packed farewells featuring some of their best loved personalities.

Hot AC “Mix 107.3” WRQX jumped 3.5-4.1 in total week 6+ share, scoring ratings increases across all primetime dayparts. Although it showed improvements in its final monthly, the station was performing at a higher level last November when it notched a 4.8 share. Morning man Jack Diamond delivered his second best book in the past year, moving 3.4-4.1 in May, eclipsed only by the 4.3 he posted last November. Diamond added nearly a full share in Adults 25-54 in the May survey, beating every month except for the station’s banner November 2018 performance.

In total week, WRQX finished Top 10 in 25-54 while Diamond was tied for eighth in the Money Demo. Even more impressive, the station tied for fourth place in Women 18-34 – eclipsed only by iHeartMedia AC WASH, Atlantic Gateway Communications contemporary Christian WGTS and iHeart CHR “Hot 99.5” WIHT – while Diamond was tied for fifth in the demo.

Although WPLJ hasn’t performed at the level of WRQX for some time, it made a big leap in its final monthly, jumping from a 2.5 in April to a 3.1 in May. The last time WPLJ had a 3.1 was November 2016. Nielsen and Media Monitors are beta-testing overnight ratings and Philippe Generali, President and CEO of Media Monitors, says the data from May 31 shows “the number of quarter hours increased toward the close down of WPLJ on Friday.” Likewise, Triton Digital streaming data shows listening to the now-defunct hot AC rose by a staggering 535% above its 4-week average from 6am-7pm.

“Talk 106.7” WYAY Atlanta, the other top 10 market station Cumulus sold, was unable to crack a 1.0 share in the May survey, remaining flat at 0.9 in total week 6+ share.
