Dan McNeil, afternoon co-host at Entercom sports “670 The Score” WSCR Chicago has been fired after posting on Twitter that ESPN sideline reporter Maria Taylor was dressed like she was attending a porn industry awards ceremony. “NFL sideline reporter or a host for the AVN annual awards presentation,” McNeil posted while watching “Monday Night Football” on ESPN. The tweet was deleted 30 minutes after being posted, Awful Announcing reports.
The AVN Awards, often referred to as the Oscars of porn, are awards sponsored and presented by the American adult video industry trade magazine AVN – Adult Video News.
On Tuesday, just before he would have been starting his afternoon show with co-host Danny Parkins, McNeil was fired, Chicago media reporter Robert Feder reports.
“For each one of us our words have power. For our brands and on-air personalities that is amplified and brings increased responsibility in how we chose to use our voices. Last night’s tweet, and its degrading and humiliating tone to a fellow female broadcaster, was unacceptable,” Rachel Williamson, Regional President said in a memo obtained by Feder. “We have the best teams in Chicago, and we must hold ourselves to high expectations to continue to be leaders in our organization, our industry and our community. We apologize to all who were offended by Dan’s words, especially Maria.”
On Monday night, response to the ill-advised tweet came fast and furious with Julie DeCaro, a former host at WSCR tweeting, “Always disappointed, never shocked. It’s almost as if there’s a connection between the lack of women on air and the blatant sexism. I think a serious question that listeners need to ask themselves is why men feel comfortable doing something like this in 2020, and why they’ve gotten that message?”
Taylor, who was making her NFL debut on the network during the Giants-Steelers game, also responded directly to McNeil. “Well Danny Dearest if you would like to continue making sexist comments about me... please bring your misogyny with you to the NBA Countdown double header I’ll be hosting tomorrow night,” she tweeted. “Hey ladies remember you can wear whatever you feel confident in!”
