The Ringer founder Bill Simmons is extending his best-selling 2009 title Book of Basketball into a new podcast that takes on all that’s changed in the NBA during the past decade. “Why write a sequel when I can turn that book into a living, breathing podcast,” Simmons says in a preview of his new podcast, called Book of Basketball 2.0. “Think of it as my basketball book, coming to life in audio form, reinvented, reincarnated, retooled, recreated for 2019 and beyond.”
Published weekly, Book of Basketball 2.0 will debut Nov. 5 with the release of five episodes. Simmons will continue to host his daily The Bill Simmons Podcast for The Ringer.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Simmons said as he discussed with friends the possibility of writing a follow-up book, he arrived at the conclusion that a podcast would be a better format for the project. “The big thing for me was [how to] create a podcast that has a longer shelf life, a podcast about players and games and things that happen in the NBA that you could listen to five years from now and seven years from now,” he said.
Book of Basketball has been in the works for the past six months and Simmons has reportedly already taped several episodes. The show will feature interviews and plenty of opinion, such as his re-ranking of the Hall of Fame Pyramid that he published in the 2009 book.
“Over the last 10 years, I've gotten to know a lot of different people in the NBA,” Simmons told the Hollywood Reporter. “I don't want to say that it changed the way that I've thought about basketball, but I think it added to it. That was another reason that I wanted to do the podcast — I feel like I know basketball better for that reason."
