Craig Schwalb, a veteran podcaster who most recently was a consultant to ABC News’ morning podcast Start Here and other podcasts produced by the network, is joining Hubbard Radio’s all-news WTOP-FM Washington, DC (103.5) as Director of Content Integration and Operations, effective March 16. Schwalb was most recently was the Program Director of Cumulus Media’s talk WABC New York (770),
“The addition of our new Director of Content Integration and Operations was incredibly important to me in terms of being able to serve the newsroom most effectively,” said Julia Ziegler, Director of News and Programming at WTOP-FM. “An additional member on the leadership team helps ensure we meet our content evolution and quality control goals, as well as our goals for team training, development and growth,” she said in the announcement.
Schwalb programmed WABC for five years, exiting in June 2019 just after hot AC sister WPLJ was transferred to Educational Media Foundation and as Cumulus was pairing down its New York properties. WABC was picked up by Red Apple Media for $12.5 million, in a deal that closed earlier this month. Schwalb previously programmed WPRO Providence and WRBZ Raleigh and has worked at CBS Radio and SiriusXM. Schwalb also brings an extensive background in podcasting to WTOP. As a consultant for ABC News, he worked on podcasts like “Start Here.”
“For news and content, DC is the epicenter. And if you are in DC you are listening to TOP,” Schwalb says. “Joining this great station, at this fascinating time, is an absolute honor and a dream come true.”
Hubbard has also named Sarah Beth Hensley as WTOP-FM’s new Digital News Director, filling the role most recently held by Ziegler. Hensley, who was most recently Digital News Manager, will start her new role at the station on April 14.
