Edith! 220

Crooked Media is best known for political and news content like its series Pod Save America and the daily news series What A Day. But it aims to show it can be funny, too. Crooked Media has teamed up with the podcast studio QCode to produce the political satire about a former first lady that some people consider America’s first female President.

The scripted comedy podcast entitled Edith! about former first lady Edith Wilson, who for almost a year after President Woodrow Wilson's 1919 stroke, would issue orders, fire people, and even cause international incidents while masquerading as her husband. Along the way, her numerous political enemies inched closer to discovering her secret.

The fictional account is the creation of writers Gonzalo Cordova (Tuca & Bertie, Undone) and Travis Helwig (Pod Save America, Billy on the Street).

"When we first heard the story of Edith Wilson's secret Presidency, Gonzalo and I said 'wow, someone's gotta turn that into a show,” said Helwig. “It wasn't until we started researching further, that we realized just how funny and disturbing the entire Edith Wilson story really was.”

Cordova – the former head writer for Crooked Media – describes the research he did for the show as an emotional rollercoaster. “My biggest complaint as a comedy writer is that I’m rarely forced to read 100-year-old letters between two dead racists, but Edith! has finally corrected that,” he said.

The cast of the eight-episode podcast is led by actress Rosamund Pike (I Care A Lot, Gone Girl). “The story of Edith! and Edith Wilson herself are wildly compelling and at times shocking,” said Pike. “It's hard to believe that Edith's part in history hasn’t been explored dramatically until now. It was fun to tell her story in this modern and irreverent way, seen through the witty and satirical eyes of Travis and Gonzalo. Podcasting is a hugely fun and creative medium.”

The cast also includes actors Clark Gregg, Stephen Root, Esther Povitsky, D'Arcy Carden, Diedrich Bader, Tom Amandes, Brandon Scott Jones, Adam Conover, and Alyssa Limperis.

Edith! is the first collaboration between Crooked Media and QCode. “It’s the perfect story for Crooked’s first fictional podcast – a hilarious, strange, revealing moment in our political history with surprising parallels to the present,” said Crooked Media co-founder Jon Lovett. “We’re thrilled to partner with QCode, who’ve led the way in scripted podcasts.”

The series is directed by Maureen Bharoocha (Golden Arm). In addition to starring in the series, Pike is also executive producing alongside QCode CEO Rob Herting, Lovett, and Crooked head of creative development and production Sarah Geismer.

“Rosamund is a wonderful collaborator who took on this fun and off-beat role and absolutely knocked it out of the park. Her work ethic, attention to detail, and professionalism are second to none,” said Herting. “It was such a joy working with her and the rest of our incredibly funny cast to bring this fresh and irreverent perspective on the Edith Wilson story to life.”

The first episode of Edith! debuts June 21 and the second debuts June 24, with subsequent episodes released every Thursday.
