It’s not just U.S. podcasters that are finding success leveraging their content for television producers. Netflix will tap the Danish podcast “Equinox 1985” for a new six-episode original series. It is described as a supernatural thriller about a young woman who is affected by the unexplainable disappearance of a school class in 1999. The series is set in Denmark and moves back and forth between 1999 and the current day. It topped the Apple Podcast chart in Denmark when released two years ago.
“It’s been very inspiring to work with a narrative that actually comes from a non-traditional format like a podcast,” said Tesha Crawford, Director of Netflix International Originals in Northern Europe.
The podcast was created by Tea Lindeburg, who will be involved with the TV series. It will be executive produced by Piv Bernth and her company Apple Tree Productions, which is backed by ITV Studios. Production is expected to start later this year. “We are very excited about the podcast Equinox being made as a TV series. It is a very unique story about the difference between reality and imagination and the relation between free will and fate – all set in a normal Danish family,” Bernth said in the announcement.
The launch date for the TV series, which will be available worldwide, has not yet been announced.
