One of the hardest things to do is naming a podcast. Even harder is picking a new one. That’s what Elaina Smith has done. Her Women Want to Hear Women podcast has been retitled Breaking Thru with Elaina as it launches its second season and expands its focus.
Recorded in Nashville, the Westwood One podcast offers a platform for female artists and proves radio listeners and concert attendees want to hear more than just male artists. Season one featured conversations with artists such as Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, and Dolly Parton. Season two has lined up Maren Morris, Maddie & Tae, and Trisha Yearwood, among others.
Smith says the podcast name will be new, but the focus of Breaking Thru will be largely the same: sharing stories about what’s been inspiring both women – and now men too. “I’ve been itching to get season two going all year long. I’m so thankful to everyone for being so patient as I worked on launching my new radio show, With Elaina. Now that it is off the ground, it’s time to keep this conversation going, and with a new name,” she said in a statement.
Smith, who co-hosts the syndicated “Nash Nights Live” show with Shawn Parr for Westwood One, launched a weekend entertainment show called “With Elaina.” The two-hour show is a mix of pop culture and entertainment chat geared toward country music fans.
Even though Women Want to Hear Women will be retired, the show did have an award-winning first and only season. It was among the podcast winners of the 44th annual Gracie Awards in April. The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation (AWMF) selected the show in the Entertainment Podcast category.
In a recent Q&A with Inside Radio, Smith called the podcast a “passion project” for her. “This podcast is a passion project of mine. I really love to champion other women, and I feel we are too often pitted against each other,” she said. “There is a drastic lack of women in the country genre right now, and we’re just opening up that conversation and hoping to be a part of the change. We love male artists as well; this isn’t about bashing guys or anything, it’s just about having more female representation and giving them a chance and a platform.”
Breaking Thru is part of Westwood One’s female-focused Empow(h)er Podcast Network. “Elaina’s podcast has a fresh feel and a strong voice, celebrating female artists who have a lot to share,” said Westwood One President Suzanne Grimes. “We believe in Elaina’s mission to inspire and empower, and are supporting the growth of her podcast across Cumulus Media’s vast marketing channels in a big way.”
