New This Week 220

This week’s crop of new podcasts includes the hunt for ghosts in some of America’s most haunted locations to the search for answers of who killed an Illinois family. There is also an up close look at the famed Newport Folk Festival as well as boundary-pushing show from two hip-hop stars. And there’s a new show aims to get men talking about their bodies, while another podcast will focus on what people are talking about on TikTok.

Here is some of what is new in podcasts this week –

...Haunted Road is a new podcast from iHeartRadio and Grim & Mild. Hosted by Amy Bruni, star of the television shows “Kindred Spirits” and “Ghost Hunters,” the podcast follows her as she takes listeners on a journey to some of America’s most haunted locations. From an Iowa house ravaged by an ax murderer, to the Oddfellows asylum in Missouri, to Lizzie Borton’s Massachusetts mansion, Bruni searches for the truth behind these haunted places, with the help of expert paranormal investigators who have actually been there.

...Geto Boys Reloaded is a new podcast from iHeartRadio and the Black Effect Podcast Network. It is hosted by Scarface and Willie D, who have thought-provoking conversations around music, entertainment, social issues and more. Just like their boundary-pushing, and sometimes, controversial music, the podcast pulls no punches in breaking down the biggest social and political topics of the day.

...Festival Circuit is returning for a second season. The Orisis Media series will this time shine a spotlight on the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. Hosted by Carmel Holt, the series will take a deep dive on what it means to play and attend the gold standard of music festivals.

Started by the legendary George Wein, Newport Folk has been a staple in the scene since its foundation. The festival laid the groundwork for the modern-day plethora of music festivals. The podcast will tell the story of Newport with the help of musicians, organizers, journalists, and community members like Wein himself, executive festival producer Jay Sweet, Brandi Carlile, Jim James, Judy Collins, Mavis Staples, Courtney Barnett, Nathaniel Rateliff, Jeff Tweedy, and Lucius, among others.

“Newport is the gold standard, with so many legendary moments in its history,” said Kirsten Cluthe, COO of Osiris Media. “We’re honored to include it in our Festival Circuit series, especially as live music comes back to life. It’s the quintessential summer music festival, and now everyone can participate, even if they’re not in Rhode Island this summer.”

Festival Season is a seasonal, narrative-style podcast about these festivals, with each season telling the story of a different, amazing music festival.

The five-episode season will be released through August 6. The 2021 Newport Folk Festival will be held July 23-25.
