Shining City Audio, the podcast studio co-created last spring by author Jon Meacham and Cadence13, is branching out beyond his typical fare of presidential historical storytelling. The new documentary series is a spin-off of Meacham’s It Was Said, a series that looked back at some of the most impactful speeches in American History. The new show called It Was Said: Sports will examine some of the most important and inspirational sports speeches throughout history.
“Sports are a vital element of our lives, and of the life of the nation,” says Meacham, who will be a co-executive producer of the series. “The pursuit of excellence in competition is inherently dramatic and touches the deepest parts of our common story,” he says.
It Was Said: Sports will be narrated by NBA legend Doc Rivers, who will take listeners through six speeches whose impact, legacy, and significance goes far beyond the world of sports. Among the speakers featured will be Muhammad Ali, Billie Jean King, and Hank Aaron. In addition to the speeches themselves, Rivers will also talk with guests who will offer their insight into each speech’s origins, the speaker, the context of the times they were given, and why they are still relevant today.
“As a man who's been in the arena, I’ve experienced firsthand the power and impact of the words of great sports figures of our time,” says Rivers. “I’m excited to join forces with Jon Meacham and C13Originals to shine a light on these pivotal moments in history.”
The issues raised in the speeches cover the arc of U.S. history during the past 50 years, including racial justice, women’s rights, LGBT equality, and how sports helped heal a nation after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
“Throughout history, the powerful words of our great sports icons have transcended sports and inspired, healed, and impacted us as a world,” says Cadence13 Chief Content Officer Chris Corcoran, who is also a co-executive producer on the series. “As we work alongside Jon to build out the Shining City Audio slate and tell these historic stories, we’re proud to partner with Doc Rivers on this timeless series that will resonate with listeners of all generations,” he says.
Season one of It Was Said: Sports will debut today (Sept. 8). New episodes will be available Wednesdays.
The launch of Shining City Audio is an outgrowth of Meacham’s 2020 deal with Cadence13 and the History Channel. They earlier worked together for the release of the Hope, Through History series and then followed up with It Was Said. The series Fate of Fact that tackled misinformation in U.S. history was the first show released under the Shining City Audio imprint.
