Apple has unveiled the new HomePod mini smart speaker device, which promises to provide impressive sound, a Siri-enabled voice assistant and smart home experience packed within a 3.3-inch compact design.
“HomePod mini is the ultimate smart speaker for anyone with an Apple device,” Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Bob Borchers said in a release. “It works effortlessly with iPhone to hand off music, answer calls, or deliver personalized listening suggestions, elevates the sound from Apple TV, plays music from a Mac and so much more.”
The new addition to the HomePod family is priced at $99 and works with Apple Music, iHeartRadio, Radio.com and TuneIn. Apple added access to more than 100,000 radio station streams to its devices, including HomePod in July 2019. The HomePod mini release says that Pandora and Amazon Music will be added to music streaming services that can be accessed through the smart speaker.
A March report from Edison Research and Triton Digital showed 27% of Americans, or 76 million people, own a smart speaker. That’s a 17% increase compared to a year ago. The data also showed that a third of people surveyed owned three or more smart speakers, which was a 33% year-to-year increase.
Broadcasters have said they see the smart speaker as the modern-day table-top radio, in part because listening to the web streams of local stations is one of the top things people use the device for.
