American Public Media is in need of a new host for the daily Marketplace Tech podcast and co-host of its Make Me Smart podcast. That is because Molly Wood has announced she will exit the public media network at month-end. Wood is joining the Launch, a venture capital firm that works with startups with an emphasis on climate technology.
“I am leaving media to become an investor working with all the climate tech that I have gotten so obsessed with over the past three years,” Wood announced on the latest Make Me Smart episode. She called it a “bucket list” option and said the Make Me Smart podcast will continue. Wood co-hosts the show with Marketplace anchor Kai Ryssdal.
"Although it's hard to leave my Marketplace family and this incredible community, I'll still be podcasting, and I know we'll always have Happy Hour! And truly, this is such an exciting opportunity to have a totally different kind of impact, and I can't wait,” Wood wrote in a follow-up post on Twitter.
Wood’s climate tech passion led her to launch the How We Survive podcast in September for APM. The series explores the technology that could provide some of the solutions to the climate change crisis. “It’s the best journalism I’ve ever done, and I’m not sure I could top it. And I believe it has laid the groundwork for much more great climate coverage at Marketplace, even if it’s not season two,” she wrote. San Francisco-based Wood said that moving into venture capitalism allows her to “have a more direct impact.”
Wood joined American Public Media in 2015 and has often been heard on the public radio “Marketplace” show on public radio. She previously was a technology editor at the New York Times and wrote about tech for CNET and CBS Interactive.
