The On Air Fest was one of the last in-person podcast events to be held last March before the pandemic lockdowns. While much has improved since last spring, organizations are embracing a digital conference for 2021 and that will mean for the first time the virtual event set from April 8-10 will be free and available to anyone who cannot make the journey to Brooklyn, NY.
“This year’s On Air Fest will be an inspiring, healing, and purposeful gathering for a global community of creators and listeners,” said Scott Newman, founder and Creative Director of Work X Work, the agency that puts on On Air Fest. “Our goal is to create a magical space where inspiring storytellers, thinkers, and artists can help make sense of this moment,” he said in the announcement.
On Air Fest takes inspiration from creative conferences, performance art and music festivals, bringing creators, artists, and fans together. This year’s festival will reimagine the annual live event with multiple virtual "portals," including a Music & Storytelling stage, a Community Lounge, and a 'Gallery' hosting meditative, durational and art performances streamed live. The festival will kick off with Hot Pod Live on Thursday, April 8, serving as a virtual town hall on the state of the podcast industry, with call-in guest speakers.
On Air Fest today also launched a call for entries for “Official Selects,” a new platform that will showcase creative short-form audio throughout the three-day event. Storytellers and producers are invited to present experimental new audio works under 10 minutes in length. Submissions can range from a work of poetry or fiction, an ambient collage, the sounds of your hometown, a gem of an interview, or a tiny documentary. The deadline for submissions, which will be judged by a panel of leading audio creatives, is Friday, March 26.
