There’s a new kid on the block among Podtrac’s September top 10 Podcast Publishers. Coming in at No. 10 is Kast Media, whose website describes it as a turnkey podcast management company. While this is its first time within the ranking, mind you, the entity is no newbie when it comes to traction in the industry: It offers 54 active shows, with a U.S. monthly audience of 5.1 million and some 25.8 million monthly downloads.

Kast’s roster of services includes professional production, from ideation through editing, mixing and mastering; as well as social and email campaign management, including organic content, newsletters, paid social management, actionable reports; and sponsorship representation with an eye toward long-term brand relationships.

Among its most popular shows: “The Only Child” with Arielle Vandenberg, “Art of Charm,” “Stand-Up” with Chris DiStefano, “On Purpose” with Jay Shetty, “King and the Sting,” “The School of Greatness” with Lewis Howes, “Penn’s Sunday School” and “The Tai Lopez Show.”

Aside from Kast Media, the top 10 publishers list based on monthly audience maintains its traditional line-up, as the chart below shows (TED drops off as Kast comes in). But the other big news: There was a shake-up at No. 1—as iHeartRadio, which was No. 1 for August, powered by the return of “The Ron Burgundy Podcast”—returned to No. 2, placing NPR back at its typical No. 1 perch.

Last month, iHeart’s U.S. Unique Monthly Audience jumped 26% to more than 23 million to make it the biggest podcast publisher. That amounted to the largest increase in audience size of any of the publishers in the top 10, according to Podtrac.

For September, six of the Top 10 Publishers saw increases in U.S. Unique Monthly Audience (led by New York Times at 8%), while three saw decreases. The average U.S. Unique Monthly Audience across the Top 10 is up 1% in September over August and rallied a dazzling 64% from September 2018.

Besides the flip of NPR and iHeartRadio, the rest of the top five remains the same: No. 3 PRX with a 10.8 million U.S. Unique Monthly Audience, followed by the New York Times (10.0 million) and Wondery (9.1 million).

Sports commandeers the No. 6 and No. 7 Publisher spots, with Barstool Sports (8.3 million) and ESPN (7.5 million); then WNYC Studios (5.9 million), TAL/Serial (5.7 million) and Kast (5.1 million) at No. 10.

By number of shows, iHeart remains the clear victor among the top 10 Podcast Publishers, with 268 active programs.
