Daybreak Insider Podcast 220

Salem Media Group is entering the competitive daily news podcast space. The Christian- and conservative-focused broadcaster’s entry, The Daybreak Insider Daily Podcast, launches today (Sept. 7). Released each weekday morning by 6 am ET, it will feature an overview of the biggest stories of the day hosted by Salem Radio News anchor Rich Thomason from the network’s Washington, DC bureau.

Salem’s entry will have a decidedly conservative point of view. “It’s clear that podcast listeners are looking for informed reporting on what’s really happening in their world,” Salem Senior VP of Spoken Word Phil Boyce said in the announcement. Pooling the network’s newsgathering and analysis resources will produce “a single podcast to provide in-depth coverage from a conservative worldview,” Boyce added. It will include contributors from SRN News, Townhall.com, as well as the Salem Radio Network.

The Daybreak Insider Podcast will serve as an audio companion to the Daybreak Insider Newsletter, which Salem distributes weekday mornings to 100,000 subscribers.

It joins a field dominated by The New York Times’ The Daily, and which also includes NPR’s Up First, ABC News’ Start Here, iHeartRadio’s The Daily Dive, The Wall Street Journal’s What’s News and the recently launched Apple News Today, among others.

Thomason brings more than forty years of news experience to the podcast including two decades with SRN News as an anchor, correspondent, and news producer. Before that he worked in Atlanta, Baltimore, and Washington in the newsrooms of CNN and the Associated Press as a news writer, editor, reporter and anchor.

Salem launched a podcast network at the start of the year, drawing on its stable of well-known conservative talk radio hosts, including Charlie Kirk and Dinesh D’Souza. It has since added Todd Starnes, Trish Regan and Jenna Ellis, in addition to the SRN hosts who have daily podcasts. The Salem Podcast Network averages more than 12 million downloads per month.
