Swedes are among the world’s most voracious listeners of podcasts with the country of 10 million punching above its weight when it comes to the number of downloads shows receive from the Scandinavian country. After all, both Acast and Spotify hail from Stockholm. Now one of the biggest shows in Sweden – Flashback Forever – is picking its hometown favorite, signing a deal with Acast.
“This is an extremely significant signing for Acast and we see great potential for the pod to grow further,” said Frida Klevemark, Content Manager at Acast. “Flashback Forever has in a short time become one of Sweden’s most acclaimed podcasts – we hope that more people will discover their spot-on and witty observations in Sweden's most mythical internet forum.”
Hosted by Emma Knyckare, Ina Lundström and Scroll-Mia, the weekly Swedish-language series seeks the answers to life's big questions by diving right into the source of wisdom – the Flashback forum. The podcast has nearly 1.2 million listens a month– with almost 23 million listens since January 2020.
“At first we mostly saw the podcast as a fun project and we had not really thought about growth or financing. But as the podcast grew, it became clear that people wanted us to continue – and also have the right circumstances to continue to prioritize the episodes and develop the format, such as arranging our upcoming live show,” said Knyckare.
For the winter, the podcast hosts are planning a tour with more than 50 performances across Sweden. Acast says the tour’s goal is to help the podcast reach new audiences and broaden its existing listener base. Under its new deal, Acast will handle the show’s hosting, distribution and marketing.
“In the future, we hope to continue to be able to do exactly what we do now – say ‘no’ to boring things and say ‘yes’ to fun things – but above all to have the freedom to do whatever we feel like doing. Maybe that's what many of our listeners appreciate about us,” said Lundström.
