The Black Lives Matter marches this summer have a lot of media companies looking at their own diversity. Some podcasters they may find they employ too few Black employees, or their show rosters come up short. An event called the Afros & Audio Novice Tech Talk hopes to help change that. Slated for tonight (July 15), the virtual get-together will teach creators what tools and tech they need to record, launch and grow a podcast.
Afros & Audio Novice Tech Talk — which is being sponsored by the podcast hosting company Acast — will feature a panel of speakers presenting their experiences in the world of podcasting and sharing how they have used technology to create audio. Speakers will include Africa Hannibal, owner and creative director of Break Bred Studio; Conscious, co-founder and owner of Bondfire Radio; and Wize Grazette, founder of Indie Creative Network.
“Afros & Audio’s mission is to become a mainstay in the lives and work of Black podcast creatives and audio professionals,” said Talib Jasir, who founded the organization in 2018. “As a creative community, our mission is to increase Black podcasts in the marketplace and build our own tables within the industry by connecting with brands, such as Acast, to offer programming that supports creatives as they launch and work to sustain their podcast.”
The event will be interactive, as audience members will be encouraged to participate and ask questions. It’s part of Afros & Audio’s Podcast Creative Kickback virtual summer event series, which will include additional events in August and September. In addition to the virtual summer series, Afros & Audio also hosts the annual Afros & Audio Podcast Festival in Brooklyn.
The free event is tonight, July 15 beginning at 8pm ET. Registration information can be found HERE.
