Radio companies saw a rise in their streaming numbers with the start of 2020, with most groups posting double-digit percentage increases from December 2019, according to the latest Triton Digital Monthly Webcast Rankers. The increases are largely due to a return to normal listening patterns following the end of the holiday season.
iHeartRadio continues to lead all broadcast radio groups with 427,443 Active Average Sessions (AAS) in the January 2020 report (M-F, 6am-8pm). It’s only a 1% increase from December 2019, when the company posted an AAS of 423,158, but still head-and-shoulders above NPR Member Stations, which is ranked second again, moving from 85,197 AAS in December to 97,804 in January, a 14% increase. Entercom’s Radio.com remains in third, posting a 9% month-over-month increase, from 83,705 AAS in December to 91,544 in January. Cumulus Streaming Network is up 18%, moving from 61,024 to 72,267, followed by Beasley Broadcasting Corporate, with 26,768 AAS in January, which is a 19% increase over December’s 22,437. Univision is up 28%, increasing from 20,664 to 26,569 month-over-month. Hubbard Broadcasting moves up a spot to eighth in January, climbing from 17,356 AAS in December to 21,297, an increase of 22%. The largest increase came from Educational Media Foundation, which saw a 40% month-over-month AAS bump, returning to the Top 10 and jumping from 13,489 in December to 19,016 in January. AccuRadio drops from eighth to tenth with a 1% decrease in AAS (18,037-17,737).
“Radio in every form – broadcast, streaming audio, and podcasts – remains a trusted and relied upon medium for news and entertainment in the United States,” said John Rosso, President of Market Development at Triton Digital. “Despite the dislocation of many workers, this data shows the remarkable stability of the medium, as well as the importance of radio in delivering information in a time of crisis.”
Pure play streaming platform Pandora Corporate, as usual, is tops in the Publishers rankings with 2,148,087 AAS in January. iHeartMedia Network, which includes all of iHeartMedia-owned streams and the streams related to network affiliations, is the sole Sales Network appearing in the Webcast Rankers, with 1,220,559 AAS in January.
