Podcast downloads held steady last week compared to a week earlier. But Podtrac says there is still a growth story to tell. Downloads during the final week of October were up 47% compared to the same period a year ago.

Halloween brought a number of new releases in the True Crime category, and Podtrac reports among the big genres True Crime had the highest week-over-week download growth at 13%. Also posting higher download numbers were the History category, which was up eight percent compared to the prior week, as well as the Business and Society & Culture genres, both of which had two percent growth. Among the categories that were softer last week were Sports and Science, both of which posted a three percent week-to-week decrease in downloads. News and Education were both down two percent.

Podtrac earlier reported that NPR and iHeartMedia split the top spot on its September ranker. NPR had the biggest unique U.S. monthly audience among publishers measured by Podtrac, while the iHeartPodcast Network had the largest number of downloads and streams during the month. Podtrac says NPR edged out iHeart in terms of reach by just 82,000 listeners during September, while iHeart had nearly 33,000 more downloads than NPR. The New York Times remained in third place during September, followed by ESPN and PRX.
