There are plenty of year-end podcast lists that rely on the creator’s opinion. But the tally issued today by Podtrac of the top new podcasts of 2019 is based on the average number of downloads the shows received between Dec. 1, 2018 and Nov. 31, 2019. The ranker shows the podcast studio Wondery had eight of the top 20 new shows, followed by the iHeartPodcast Network, which had five.

Podtrac doesn’t publicly release specific listener numbers for individual shows and it only includes publishers who have signed up for its measurement service. That means its monthly ranker doesn’t include the full universe of podcasts, including some that may have more listeners than what appears on its list. Podtrac says in order to qualify as a “new” show in its ranker, a podcast needed to release its first episode between Dec. 1, 2018 and Nov. 31, 2019. Episodes marked by publishers as “bonus” or “trailer” episodes were excluded from the calculations.
