BIA/Kelsey boosts TV forecast.
Based on indications advertisers are returning to local television and the pending political primary season, BIA/Kelsey is more optimistic about local TV’s recovery. The firm projects industry revenue will increase 11% to $18.1 billion this year. That’s a five point increase over an earlier forecast. Two months after calling for a conservative 1.5% revenue increase for radio, BIA/Kelsey has raised its outlook and now projects a 3.7% increase over last year – more than double its earlier forecast. The financial services firm anticipates total radio industry revenues will hit $14.21 billion this year.

For the second time this year, BIA/Kelsey has upgraded its radio outlook. The media forecaster now says over-the-air radio revenue will climb 4.4% to $13.9 billion in 2010, with another $459 million in revenue from digital and online sources. BIA says resurgent national ad dollars will drive top 10 market stations to an average 6% increase, with San Francisco and Philadelphia experiencing 8% increases.

The old adage “fish where the fish are” may best describe a new analysis of the spending habits of local marketers. BIA/Kelsey surveyed 152 companies in May, asking them how much they spent a year on marketing their products and where those dollars go. They found larger spenders — those spending at least $25,000 a year on media advertising and promotions — were far more likely to use radio and television.
