Edison Research

Edison Research has made public some of the results of its latest Podcast Consumer Tracker. It shows The Joe Rogan Experience was the most listened-to podcast among weekly podcast consumers during the past year. Rogan’s podcast has been at the top spot since Edison began tracking show listening last summer. The morning news podcast The Daily ranked second, followed by This American Life, My Favorite Murder and Crime Junkie. "Even with the work and life disruptions caused by COVID-19, people did continue listening to their favorite podcasts, and we ultimately saw little to no reduction in reach among weekly podcast listeners,” said Edison Research Senior VP Tom Webster.

While Edison does not make its numbers public, the ranker offers a peek at what users of its subscription-only report are seeing. Here are the top ten U.S. podcasts from Q3 2019 through Q2 2020 as ranked by the percentage of weekly podcast consumers 18 and older who have listened to them:

Edison’s list of the top 30 podcasts is based on reach, not downloads. It achieves that ranker by surveying weekly podcast listeners. The result is a rolling set of consumer recall data.

The latest data is based upon 8,080 online interviews among weekly podcast consumers, aged 18 and older. Interviews were conducted in English and Spanish. Sampling was conducted from July 7, 2019 through June 24, 2020. All respondents were instructed to enter the names of all podcasts they listened to the week before the interview into an online diary. While all responses were unaided, Edison did provide people with instructions on how to obtain a list of the podcasts they listened to from the media players they used. The data is weighted to nationally representative numbers for weekly podcast consumers from The Infinite Dial 2020.
