Macys 375

As Valentine’s Day approaches, Macy’s is calling on shoppers to “up your romance” with gifts for her and him. For the week of Feb. 1-7, the department store chain placed 36,420 ads on broadcast radio to drive shoppers into its brick and mortar and online stores for Valentine’s Day deals. That made it radio’s No. 7 advertiser in the 110 markets tracked by Media Monitors, making a “leap of the week” move from No. 68 the week before.

On Monday, Inside Radio reported on Veritonic’s Audio Ad Index, which rates how well commercials perform with listeners, as opposed to how many spots they air. Leading the Ad Index in January was AutoZone, which Veritonic said performed the best across traditional radio, podcasts, and streaming audio services. A radio regular, the auto parts retailer ranked No. 29 on Media Monitors’ latest tally with 17,028 spots.

McDonald’s placed second on Veritonic’s Audio Ad Index and the quick serve restaurant ranked No. 22 on the Media Monitors list. Employment services provider Zip Recruiter came in third on the Veritonic index and No. 18 on the Media Monitors compilation.

Comparing the two charts shows many of the same advertisers on both tallies. Among them are USAA Insurance (No. 21 in spot volume, No. 4 on Veritonic’s Audio Ad Index); Wendy’s (No. 14 on Media Monitors, No. 5 on Veritonic), Progressive (No. 3 on Media Monitors, No. 6 Veritonic), The Home Depot (No. 64 Media Monitors, No. 7 Veritonic) and Indeed (No. 6 Media Monitors, No. 7 Veritonic).

For the week of Feb. 1-7, 2021, the top 10 on the Media Monitors tally are Centers for Disease Control & Prevention at 1, iHeartRadio at 2, Progressive at 3, Babbel at 4, Bank of America at 5, Indeed at 6, Macy's at 7, “Longshot Return Man” at 8, Bristol Meyers Squibb-Pfizer at 9 and GEICO at 10.
