Ron Gleason 375

Ron Gleason, Brand Manager/News Director at Audacy “News Radio 780” WBBM Chicago, is retiring from the company in January.

“I’ll be retiring from full-time management at the end of January, stepping down as WBBM’s Brand Manager/News Director. People have told me there’s something called free time out there, and I’d like to learn more about it,” Gleason wrote in a memo to staff acquired by Inside Radio.

Gleason started his career as a sportscaster in the 1970s. He worked at WCBY Cheboygan and WJOL Joliet before joining WBBM for the first time in 1985 as a reporter. From 1988-1991, Gleason served as Sports Director at WMAQ and also filled in as play-by-play announcer for Chicago White Sox broadcasts. He was the original PD of “The Score” WSCR, joining the station in 1991 and overseeing the launch of its 24/7 sports talk format. He also worked as the play-by-play announcer for DePaul University basketball from 1997-2005.

After leaving “The Score” in 2001, Gleason served as President of UBC Radio until 2004, when he joined WBBM as a news anchor. He was named to his current role in 2005.

“I love what I do, I love this newsroom and all of you—the people I’ve had the honor to work with over the years—the journalists, production personnel, sales and marketing folks, my fellow PDs, engineers, and yes, even the market managers,” the memo continued. “Frankly, I’m a workaholic, which is a great attribute when you’re on call 24 hours a day. But I’m older now, my kids are grown, and Linda and I are looking forward to spending more than just a few days a year at a home in the desert that’s been sorely neglected. This decision comes after months of planning, with much-appreciated support and understanding from [VP/Programming] Greg [Solk], [SVP/Market Manager] Rachel [Williamson], and all levels of the company.”

Audacy is actively searching for Gleason’s replacement.
