Two hosts of the U.S politics-focused Americast podcast for the BBC are leaving the news network to start a podcast with rival Global. Jon Sopel, the BBC’s North American Editor, and television anchor Emily Maitlis will also host a new radio program for the U.K. commercial talk radio station LBC.
“We’ve been blown away by the reception for Americast, and are so excited that Global has given us the opportunity to build on this success by creating this innovative news podcast,” said Sopel. “This is an unmissable opportunity.”
Maitlis had been at the BCC for 20 years, most recently hosting its “Newsnight” television program. Sopel has been with the BBC since 1983.
Global says full details of Maitlis and Sopel’s podcast will be announced later in the year. The BBC has not yet said whether the Americast will continue.
“We are just so delighted to be launching this brand new podcast – which will build on everything we’ve achieved with Americast over the last few years – and it will find new audiences and a new home with Global. I couldn’t be more excited,” said Maitlis in the announcement.
As part of the deal, Dino Sofos, the founder of audio production company Persephonica, also joins Global as the new podcast’s executive producer. Sofos is the former head of BBC News Podcasts and created the Americast and Brexitcastformats.
